Diamonds are the Fire, the Excitement, the Pizzaz of the jewellery world. This is why diamonds are the most common gem that is used in jewellery. Diamonds are the whitest, the most reflective and hardest gemstone. This gives us the Sparkle, Brilliance or Bling as we like to call it. We are all attracted to this in one way or another, like Bower Birds.

There are many things to understand about Diamonds; there are all the aspects regarding quality and then there are the different ways to use diamonds in a jewellery design.

The first aspect is how you use the diamonds to best effect in the design. Different cuts of diamonds can show
differently in different types of settings. This where sitting down with a jeweller who designs and hand makes the piece will be able to guide you in the ways to get most impact and the correct effect you are looking for in you piece of jewellery.

Sometimes you will want the stone or stones set in claws, other times it could be in bezels. There are many variations of settings. I have seen so many diamonds set in unsuitable settings taking away the fire and life out of the stone.

So many times people come to me with a ring they want remodelled and once we reset the diamonds in a more appropriate style of setting the client is overwhelmed with the result. Remember it is the advice you receive from an experienced jeweller like myself that makes the difference to get the maximum impact.

Once you have talked about what you are looking for in a design then you can get into the technical aspects of the diamonds I have outlined below. This will help you choose the most suitable stone for your budget and needs.

The quality points are known as the 4 Cs, Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat. Cut is the proportions of the stone and the finish of the polish. This is what gives the stone it's brilliance or sparkle, this can never be underrated and I always recommend a well cut stone. Cut also this refers to the different shapes that diamonds can be cut into.

Colour refers to the whiteness of the Diamond; D being the whitest going through the alphabet in decreasing whiteness. D E F G H and I are all classed as white with I being the lowest white colour before you get slight tinting in the diamond.

Clarity is how clean the diamond is, most diamonds have natural imperfections and these are called inclusions. With all the diamonds that I recommend you won't be able to see the inclusions with your naked eye and they won't effect the brilliance of the diamond.

Carat is the weight of the diamond,1 Carat = 0.20grams. There are 100 points in a Carat. So for example a Half Carat diamond is 50 points or 0.50 carats =0.10grams.

Diamonds are cut into a variety of shapes Round, Emerald, Oval, Cushion, Princess, Pear, Baguette, Trilliant, Marquise, Radiant and many other fancy shapes. All this information is very important in selecting diamonds for a handcrafted piece of jewellery and I can take you through each step of the process.

The other thing to emphasise is that I do not use any conflict or Blood Diamonds.

All the diamonds I source through the most reputable channels.
